Secretary's Day was originally founded in 1952 to recognize the millions of secretaries and support people critical to the day-to-day operations and success of U.S. businesses, as well as encourage careers in a host of administrative workplace roles. It quickly became a week-long observance of appreciation for office people throughout North America. In 1955, National Secretaries Week was officially moved to the last full week of April, with Secretaries Day being the Wednesday of that week. Then, in 2000, the occasion was renamed Administrative Professionals Day to more accurately reflect the wide variety of technical, administrative, and support positions in today's economy. The observance is now recognized throughout the world as an ideal opportunity for employers to express appreciation to secretaries, administrators, and support personnel who otherwise all too often go unrecognized.
